Once Secret Red Hill Fuel Depot Oahu

When you hear people talking about places on the island of Oahu, you pretty much expect to hear mentions of Waikiki Beach, the Honolulu Zoo, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, etc. And of course there is the almost endless local murmuring about Hawaiian shirts and clothing being in vogue for what seems like a millennium.

But there is much more to Hawaii. If you never leave Waikiki strip you may never learn or experience the really awesome things about Hawaii. Hawaiian shirts are always awesome!

Do you know there are some places in Hawaii and topics that are not part of the tourist packages and rarely spoken of for one reason or another?

One case in point is Red Hill Fuel Depot. Red Hill basically consists of 20 enormous underground fuel tanks that are buried up to 450 feet deep, located in a ridge in Honolulu.

The primary purpose for the massive fuel storage system in what is now one of Hawaii's engineering marveled, was to store and provide fuel to the military ships in Pearl Harbor.

Since declassification in the 1990s there has been small amounts of information released about the fuel tanks, though I am sure it’s not everything.

After all, the government is involved. Of course there are the burning questions, do the tanks leak and are they still in use. The answer to both is yes.
