Get Funky with Hawaiian Clothing

I started this post with the mindset of posting some cool looking pictures of people, mainly men, looking 'funky' while wearing some cool tropical clothing similar to the Hawaiian shirts we offer on the Wave Shoppe web store. SO I went to Google images and started searching for some appropriate images.

I was a bit taken back by the flood of images that didn't contain anything more than a picture of a lone Hawaiian shirt. And before you say it, I don't consider someone wearing ill fitting clothing with a tropical print as funky. Actually I think many of these people they refer to as "models" are fashion disasters, but that's a post for another day.

So as I paged through the shirt images I finally came across something 'funky'. While it wasn't exactly what I was looking for, it was close enough. At least someone was creative enough to dress up their monkey in Hawaiian garb, hence transforming them into funky monkeys. So a tip of my beachcomber hat to the person that dreamed up the funky monkey luau setting.

But all is not lost! The ladies save the day with tis picture of Diane Kruger wearing a blue Hawaiian shirt with a simple black skirt.

Diane looks very nice, as well as looking funky. I should mention that while we don't offer this exact print on our website, we do offer a nice selection of womens Hawaiian shirts that are sure to please, as well as add a little funk to your life.

Don Fracisco De Paula Marin Coffee in Hawaii

In 1813 Don Fracisco De Paula Marin, a Spaniard whom eventually became a confidant of Hawaiian King Kamehameha, recorded in his journal a story called "Manin". In that journal he noted that he had planted coffee on the island of Oahu.

Don Fracisco De Paula Marin had many passions and talents, one being he was a horticulturist, planting seedlings left by Spanish ships, unfortunately the first seedlings did not live. As the time passed by, Fracisco De Paula Marin again began diligently and successfully planting coffee in the islands. Then in 1825 royal governor Boki and a group of select local agricultural people brought plants from Brazil, and also successfully planted coffee in the valley of Manoa.

The coffee plants produced beans without any trouble. As the coffee plants kept growing and propagating, it eventually lead to all of the islands of Hawaii being introduced to coffee. As the coffee groves produced more and more delicately flavored brown beans, they also began to usher in a period for small factories to begin commercially processing coffee.

As this industry was further developing, the government successfully made the improvements that benefited the coffee groves, such as sound agricultural research, farming techniques unique to the geographical area. The coffee industry had great amount of support from everyone, to the point that it was prospering the Island.

Coffee in Hawaii was as popular as Hawaiian shirts from Wave Shoppe and macadamia nuts from Mauna Loa. Of course once coffee became a extremely popular as well as valuable commodity, the government soon decided that they needed to tax the daylight out of it.

One of the best known and rarer coffee plants is the Kona coffee plant. The price of this coffee was so high, that this alone made the Kona farmer's pretty famous through out the world. The Kona's brown coffee bean is now often blended outside of Hawaii.

This amazing coffee is been successfully selling in the markets since 1970. Even today Kona coffee is still the best tasting coffee in the islands.

Cereus Flowers Bloom at Night

Its hard to believe that it's already fall as well as starting to cool down in many parts of the country. But that doesn't stop us from making Hawaiian shirts no mam.

This week sewing did a partial release on a beautiful new design that's perfect for Hawaiian shirt Fridays at work, as well as holidays such as Christmas.

As our regular readers already know, we name our shirts, the names are usually derived from something in the shirts design, well most of the time. This one is called the Burgundy cereus flower Hawaiian shirt

Cereus flowers bloom at night, in Hawaii, night-blooming cereus crown the lava rocks and some species have a very short lifespan and bloom only once a year for a single night. But don't worry, the cereus flowers on these shirts are in bloom 24/7

Automobile Threads

It's pretty common to place a design or embroidered logo on a shirt to shows ones affiliation to a company or brand. But when you have a obsession for vehicles, such as automobiles, you go all out and get a shirt that looks like a billboard ad for your favorite auto. 

While we have certainly seen our share of t-shirts with a full spectrum of automotive themes, from my personal favorite, which were the shirts with big daddy Ed Roth's Rat Fink rat rods, to almost every make and model of classic car, its probably been put on a t-shirt.

But equally popular with the car crowd are Hawaiian shirts with cars which are adorned with everything from woody cars, to hot rods such as 5-widow ford coupes. While t-shirts are predominantly white, a Hawaiian shirt with automobiles can come in a myriad of colorways. White, blue and green are very popular colors with automobile enthusiasts.

Wave Shoppe's which are designed and manufactured in Hawaii. That particular shirt boasts a red woody car parked on a palm tree lined beach.

The designs and color combinations available are only limited by your imagination. Many of the Hawaiian car shirts contain secondary themes such a 50s diners, cruise nights, and of course imaginary beach themes. Ha, most of the classic cars I have seen at car shows would get stuck in the sand, so many designs are just pure fantasy.

One thing I have not seen on Hawaiian shirting as of yet are the expensive late model cars such as Cadillac SRX parked on the beach or a Cadillac CTX or the Audi A8 L W12 cruising town, but its possible that those cars and many others could actually make it into a Hawaiian shirt in the next 20 years or so. I mentioned Cadillac because at some point in our future the 55 Chevy's are going to step aside and those Cadillac models are going to become the new "classic Chevys".

And take note that shirts emblazoned with cars are not just for the guys, as you can see in the picture above, the are a lot of women working at the speedway and they wear all sorts of shirts with automobiles when they are at work.

To Tuck or Not To Tuck – that is the question

Sometimes my customers ask me the craziest questions and todays’ customer wins the award. This gentleman comes into the store and bellows dramatically from the door “To Tuck or Not To Tuck! That is my question!

I have to say I was amused by his question as well as his dramatic flair but he really wanted to know so I kept my response to my standard answer of “there is not steadfast rule”.

 

I have been asked this question before and the answer is that we work really hard to make comfortable, colorful Hawaiian shirts here at the Wave Shoppe and we encourage our customers to wear their shirts a little loose and hanging down instead of tucking them in. 

 

After all a loose fitting shirt allows for air to flow through and keeps you cool and comfortable I did say at the end of our conversation the only thing we discourage you to do is wear one of our shirts and pair them with black crew socks and any type of sandals because that is just wrong on so many levels!!!!

So if you are reading this blog post and you wear sandals and black socks, instead of getting all dignified and letting me know why it ok in your opinion. I say to you “ Bruddah just get some Slippahs!

How to make a grown man (almost) cry!

Recently my husbands’ Hawaiian shirt collection has grown to overflowing one whole closet.  While rifling through his stash I noticed some of the ones he has had 10 or more years are faded and a little ragged so I asked him to weed out the old ones to make room for some new ones and the look on his face made me laugh out loud.  Seriously you would think I had told him the sky was falling.  “But those are my favorite Hawaiian shirts” he said to which I replied so are all 150 or more but we don’t have the room to keep the old ragged ones and as the owner of a Hawaiian shirt apparel company you should be wearing the ones that still look good!  

After bantering and bartering he agreed to give 10 measly shirts to the Goodwill. So then he spent 15 minutes trying to select the ones he could part with and that was hilarious next thing you know he stomps off muttering “just pick the ones I can’t wear any more”  so I agreed and while he was gone I found 15 shirts that had seen their better days years ago. The next morning he came out of the bedroom wearing a t-shirt that had holes in it so can you guys guess what will happen next?

Top 5 Things I Spill On My Hawaiian Shirts

We have all been there, your eating something and not paying attention and bam, its all over the front of your shirt. The beauty in spilling things on your Hawaiian shirts is that they tend to act as a sort of “camouflage” for the alien substance now intertwined and seemingly married to the front of your shirt.

I wont go as far as saying that I have a 5 second rule if the spill looks like it is salvageable, but I will list the top 5 things I frequently spill down the front of my Hawaiian shirts.

1. 711 Slurpee’s Why just the other day I was walking out to the patio and I was stricken with a with a major slurpee throat freeze, at the same time my flip-flop caught the lip of one of the paving stones. I somehow managed to squeeze the cup just hard enough to cause the lid to pop off at the exact time I was trying to regain my footing. Nothing like dumping 64 ounces of colored slush down the front of your shirt! (My dogs were happy)

2. McDonalds egg mcmuffin’s. McDonalds is my first pick when I am starving to death and in my car, there is one conveniently placed between my house and the Wave Shoppe Store. Normally their egg mcmuffins are pretty easy to eat, but every once in a while they throw in a few that are juicier than others, and you can guess what happens next.









3. Chocolate fudge ice cream. I am mot sure what it is about me and ice cream, but when I am eating it I become oblivious to everything around me. And that includes when its dripping off the spoon onto my shirt












4. Taco Hell. By far one of the most gut wrenching menus on the planet. Nothing like a hibiscus flower Hawaiian shirt with dollop of sour cream and a river of taco grease running through it.












5. Anything with BBQ sauce on it. My main downfall is smoked baby back ribs dripping with sauce, enough said.

Food stained shirts may be the international symbol for a satisfied man, but I am sure glad that I have a nearly endless supply of Hawaiian shirts for men. You never know when you are going to have a long string of those bad shirt days.
